Be a Generalist or Specialist?
Always thought being a generalist was my strength. I gained vast amount of knowledge without a doubt being one.
While it can open many doors, but its like standing at multiple doors and never really stepping through any.
I recently had a greater realization, stepping into one as a specialist is like going into the Wonderland with Alice. Its a hell of a ride!
In my career of 12+ years, I have been sampling everything, I tried to play all the roles an organization needs, even founded a startup and failed.
The shift was due to the problems that I have been solving lately. It requires deeper understanding as well as a trait of being a generalist to solve problem through existing means.
The shift has made me get obsessed with the problem and finding the solution, it is so hard that it has stolen my sleep and I enjoy that.
But, once I get the answers, I am falling back to being a generalist, so I can gather more knowledge to connect more dots quickly to solve more complex problems.
Be generalist to gain more knowledge, go deeper into something when the problem needs it, get out of the wonderland, and solve the problem.
